Otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery

Dr. Košec graduated from the University of Zagreb School of Medicine in 2010 with an average grade of 4.93 (out of 5). During his studies he was a demonstrator in the courses Physiology and Immunology, Pathophysiology and Clinical Propaedeutics. He was awarded the Certificate of Excellence in Pathophysiology, the Dean’s Award for the best fourth-year student, and the Rector’s Award for the best scientific work “Significance of clinical status of the head and neck in the indication, scope and outcome of surgical treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the scalp and neck.” He was chosen as one of the best students in Croatia and was awarded a scholarship from the University of Zagreb, a scholarship from the City of Zagreb for postgraduate studies, and a Top Scholarship under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Croatia.

He passed the specialist exam in 2018. He completed a professional postgraduate study in otorhinolaryngology, and then a PhD study at the University of Zagreb School of Medicine in November 2017 with his dissertation “Prognostic value of tissue proteomic profile in stages I and II of malignant melanoma of the scalp and neck”. In November 2018, he passed the European Exam in Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery. He was elected a research associate at the University of Zagreb School of Medicine in May 2018, and a postdoctoral fellow / senior assistant at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology in his university hospital in May 2019. He is a member of the European Academy of Otology and Neurotology, and in 2019 he was elected an associate member of the American College of Surgeons. He published 40 scientific papers, and is the author of 9 chapters in books and textbooks. He is a reviewer in 12 international journals, and a junior editor in the International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology. He underwent additional education at the Landesklinikum Graz, St. Poelten and Weill-Cornell seminars in Salzburg (Austria), Prosper-Hospital Klinik für HNO-Heilkunde in Recklinghausen (Germany), Diakonessenhuis and Antoni Van Leeuvenhoek Clinic in Amsterdam (Netherlands), Institute for Head and Neck Surgery, Cleveland Clinic and Cranial Base Surgery Center, University of Pennsylvania, House Ear Institute in Los Angeles and Michigan Ear Institute in Ann Arbor (USA).

His areas of professional interest are otology, plastic and reconstructive head and neck surgery, basic research in medicine and scientific work, popularization of science, academic medicine and medical statistics. He is happily married, the father of one daughter, an incorrigible optimist and an advocate of excellence, enlightenment and humanism.
