Crohn’s disease is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It causes inflammation in the digestive tract, most commonly in the end of the small intestine (the ileum) and the beginning of the large intestine (the colon).<\/span><\/p>\n

To simplify, In Crohn\u2019s disease, the immune system doesn\u2019t know which bacteria are supposed to be there and which aren\u2019t. Because of that it attacks the gut and causes ulcers (sores). Crohn\u2019s disease can affect anywhere from the mouth to the butt however is most commonly seen in the small intestine or colon.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the Causes?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Anyone can develop Crohn’s disease, but most sufferers show symptoms between their mid-teens and mid-thirties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Family history and cigarette smoking may play a role in the onset of Crohn’s disease, although these risk factors are not well established. It is believed that tobacco smokers are twice as likely to develop Crohn\u2019s disease as nonsmokers. People with Crohn\u2019s who smoke are also more likely to have more severe inflammation and are more likely to need surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n

The disease is more likely to develop if a close relative also has it, according to the National Human Genome Research Institute, the risk of a child developing Crohn’s disease increases by 35% when both parents have inflammatory bowel disease.<\/span><\/p>\n
