Multiple sclerosis (MS) is caused by your immune system mistakenly attacking parts of the central nervous system, which includes the brain, the optic nerves, and the spinal cord, and is a major cause of non-traumatic disability in young adults. It’s not yet clear what is the cause however, it may be a combination of genetic and environmental factors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the symptoms of Multiple sclerosis (MS) are not strictly an immediate cause of death, patients with MS have a statistically significant increase in mortality compared with the general population, with a reduction of life expectancy of 7\u201314 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Scientists believe to have finally created a treatment that achieves the long-term remission of the relapsing form of MS. (the most common type of MS)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Who does MS impact?<\/span><\/h2>\n

At the moment of writing, it is estimated that 1,2 million people living in Europe have been diagnosed with MS, though every 5 minutes a new person is diagnosed with it around the world, nearly 70% of which are women.<\/span><\/p>\n

The condition is commonly diagnosed between the ages of 18 and 40, while the global average age of diagnosis is 32. Currently, there are at least 30,000 children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with MS.<\/span><\/p>\n

The negative impact MS has on the body cannot be stressed enough, as 80% of individuals diagnosed with it are forced to stop working within 15 years of the onset of the disease.<\/span><\/p>\n

Symptoms<\/span><\/h2>\n

Multiple sclerosis can damage any part of the central nervous system, therefore the symptoms may differ greatly from individual to individual. The symptoms are not constantly evident and may change over the course of the disease depending on the location of affected nerve fibers.
